Yard Waste collection in Detroit began on March 30, 2026 and will continue until December 19, 2026.
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR:
In Grandmont, that means our 1st Yard Waste collection will be Friday, April 3, and will end Friday, December 18, 2026. Please note these dates on/ln your calendars so you are prepared.
● Only use paper bags, or your own (clearly marked “YARD WASTE ONLY”) 32 Gallon plastic or metal container. Note the weight limit is 60 pounds. No plastic bags!
● Twigs or branches less than 4ft in length or 2” in diameter may be placed in yard waste bags. Larger branches should be tied and placed at the curb.
Do not store your refuse or recycling can in your front yard. Your container is only allowed at the curb from 6pm on the day before collection and shall be removed no later than 9pm on the day of collection according to city ordinance. Your garbage container must have a lid without holes to prevent rodent damage and spillage. Please securely bag all garbage before putting it into your container. Rats are predominantly a “people problem” based on poor habits or indifference regarding trash and garbage disposal. Help keep Grandmont clean, litter, and rat free while providing a healthier environment for all of our community neighbors. Remember to promptly pick up all animal waste, and remove uneaten pet food and water before dark.
To sign up for weekly pickup reminders, text your street address to 313-800-7905.
If you need a reasonably priced DPW Paid Pickup for Bulk or Yard Waste items that exceed the City’s free pickup, call 313-876-0004 to request a price quote.
● The city of Detroit website has more detailed information on the “do’s and don’ts” of Bulk, Yard Waste & Recycling best practices and regulations, and penalties for non-compliance.
APRIL – PLANT A TREE! The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now! Your health and well-being (and your children’s) will thank you and you are helping the environment and reducing air pollution while increasing home value and beauty.
As Nelson Henderson states so wisely, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
And Wangari Maathai reminds us well that, “A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky. It tells us that in order to aspire we need to be grounded and that no matter how high we go it is from our roots that we draw sustenance.
APRIL, IN GRANDMONT! The month of March uncovered all the trash from over-winter months’. April is the “Spring Cleanup” month (both inside and outside) of our homes to bring a fresh perspective while admiring the unique characteristics of our Grandmont homes and gardens in preparation for our April 11 annual meeting and our July 25 Garden Tour. Let’s get it together in Grandmont. We are only successful when neighbors pitch in and make positive choices to better our surroundings.
