Subzero temperatures couldn’t stop Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation and other community partners from celebrating the Ribbon Cutting at The Residence at West Outer Drive and the Groundbreaking of Minock Park Place. For years, residents in Grandmont Rosedale wished that something would come of “the old iHOP” and that there was a way for elder residents to age in place and these two projects would ensure that there is a solution to those issues! Executive Director Michael Randall welcomed guests and community partners and shared the sort of journey it takes to make something like these projects happen, but the emphasis from both him and all speakers was that community is what makes it happen! There have been countless hours of community conversations, working with and for community members, not letting things like a global pandemic, rising building and construction costs, and funding stop the progress being made in Northwest Detroit!
Speakers at the event included: Mayor Mike Duggan, Councilman Pro-Tem James Tate, Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans, Wayne County Commissioner for District 6 Monique Baker McCormick, Minock Park Block Association President Vicki Holmes as well as representatives from Representative Rashida Tlaib’s office, State Senator Mary Cavanagh’s office, Cinnaire Solutions, MISHDA, Invest Detroit, and others.
District 1’s own Councilman Pro-Tem James Tate shared remarks that stuck with me, as someone who doesn’t always get to attend events like these. He spoke with pride about these developments in Grandmont Rosedale not only as a Detroiter but as someone who was raised in these very neighborhoods. These developments will allow folks to age in place, bring 35 new residents to the area (specifically Minock Park), provide affordable housing and will transform spaces to increase and maintain home values in the area.
We are grateful and excited to see what is to come as the Minock Park Place space is built and as residents move into the Residence at West Outer Drive!
