HAPPY NEW YEAR!
‘Tis the season…..It seems lately that many people are asking for help/handouts in the form of money, housing, food, services, etc. Many agencies have stepped up to provide many with the help they need.
Grandmont Community needs a little help too. Our membership should be much higher than it is. We would hope you will want to pay your yearly dues of only $30 without us having to ask. Many do, and it’s appreciated very much that you have trust and faith in the neighborhood you call home. A few neighbors have even paid through 2028! We do the best we can with the resources and donations we get. Our books are always transparent and open, and we are accountable to you.
But it’s the “strength in numbers” that would solidify our status as a safe, welcoming, historically active community where the City notices and respects our efforts to better our lives within the City of Detroit. And, as a member neighborhood of GRDC (Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation), we need your input, your participation, and your dues in 2025. Please “GIFT GRANDMONT” in 2025. This “GIFT” in the form of your $30 dues payment, serves as a “reminder of who we are and what we are capable of…that we need to look out for each other and leave a legacy of pride to those who follow.” We deserve better, and we can do better. More people need to stand with us and be counted in our membership. We volunteer our time for you and while we don’t get paid, it is so rewarding in the friendships and connections we make. Join in. Why not consider running for the board or joining a committee (or form one!) if you have time, talent, energy, ideas, resources, qualifications, etc. We want and need your input as well as your monetary support to thrive.
Our $30 yearly dues or fees are a bargain. We hope you agree. This Newsletter, our Scholarship, Beautification, Environmental, Advertising, Security & Radio Patrol, Ramsay Park, Social, Street & Block Captains, Youth & Education committees – and more – all strive to improve our quality of life in the place we call home in Grandmont.
And, We try to save you money!
$125.00 refund on your taxes from the “Application for Senior Citizen Solid Waste Tax Discount”. (We did this easy form and received a check from the city, as we had already paid our taxes.) Check your taxes for this line item. If it says $250 and you are a principal resident 65 or older, you need to apply between July 1- September 15). Once you receive this discount you don’t need to re-apply yearly.
$51.00 Year (DTE Senior Discount at $4.75/month noted on your bill). You must apply for this specifically if you are 65 or older. This is NOT the Senior Rate, but an added discount.
Books, gloves, backpacks – and scholarships – are available for younger residents. Don’t miss out on help available by ignoring your community!
While we are not always successful in all endeavors, we try to get resolution and answers for you when requested. We just need more people to become active in the process!
VACANT PROPERTY TASK FORCE
We are looking forward to 2025 and trying to strategize better tactics to communicate with owners of vacant homes (and rental compliance issues). After compiling a list of concerns from a Fall survey, Ethel Smith, Debra Parnell and I will meet in January. A few houses have been vacant for many years and we would like to persuade those owners to rehab, repair, paint, pay dues, sell, etc.
Neighbors and Block Captains: Please check on any vacant houses on your block. Call one of us to notify us if a house becomes vacant. Report suspicious activity and remove circulars from the porch if you can. I can post a “No Handbills” sign if requested. A vacant house that appears occupied keeps your house safer, especially if it’s next to you or across the street.
